Here is a great partner set drill combo cardio workout from BB Renato Tavares and BB Tommy Wales.   This something that I lack in my own training and you can see how they put it to great use..

 

I always liked Rafael Lovato Jr  style and in this match from the Metamoris tournament it really  shows.  Rafael goes up against the great Kayron and really shows his skills…This was one of my favorite matches of the night….

Naudi Aguilar is a great personal trainer and his functional strength routines are really unique….Check out this great movement routine.  You should definitely look up his channel on youtube, there is a lot of great stuff for the BJJ guys out there…

 

 

Cobrinha Warm Ups..

I am always on the lookout for better ways to drill and warmup.  Well in this video from Cobrinhabjj.com I think I hit the jack pot. Here are some unique drills that are a definite must-add to your jiu jitsu workouts.  I especially like how Cobrinha adds some capoeira into the routine plus the heavy drilling for the inverted guard…

 

Paragon Black belt Sean Apperson shows a really nice cross sides escape here that transitions into the Cross-guard.  The detail he gives in this video is great, plus the options to attack or sweep from this move add that nice finishing touch to the the move.  Like any other technique you’ll have to drill this sequence a lot before you can get the mechanics down correctly, but once you do you’ll have your opponent scrambling to get away from you…

 

There are two reasons why I love watching Kron Gracie compete. One is that he shows how you can use basic techniques at the highest levels of competition validating the notion in BJJ that its all about refining your basics.

Two is that he’s always in constant motion when caught in bad spots which you get to see in this clip. Ive seen too many guys stop and rest when caught in a bad spot (me included, lol) letting their opponent capitalize on the position. Kron never gives his opponent time to rest when they catch him off guard….

Bioginastica is a combo yoga, martial arts, and bodyweight conditioning program invented by Orlando Cani. Cani is the one who taught Rickson Gracie his unique bodyweight programs.  A lot of top jiu jitsu guys use this program to enhance their jiu jitsu conditioning.  because of its use of flowing sequences it blends nicely to the Bjj guys repertoire. Heres a nice flow to try out…..

Here is some old footage taken from the documentary “Choke” about Rickson Gracie showing him doing his daily workout routine…This is some great stuff to try and add to your current workout routine..You would probably need a actual Yoga instructor to teach you some of the advanced breathing techniques in this video so I would not attempt them on your own. Still some great stuff though…

Everyone that has anything to do with brazilian jiu jitsu today owes a debt of gratitude to Royce Gracie.  He’s the last of the tournament UFC champions who fought all weight and sized individuals…. For my money Royce had the best MMA guard, or street guard there ever was..

I love this match for a lot of reasons. One is that you can watch Royce use little energy throughout the match, purposely taking his time to set each position and make his opponent burn out.  Second, it shows you the basics of Gracie jiu jitsu  at work. Third,  Royce never explodes through his positioning, he takes it an inch at a time..

Funny thing is that if you read the by line of this youtube clip it talks about how his opponent only had 6 months of MMA training, but if you look at the guy you can see that he’s definitely way more athletic than Royce. Everyone forgets that Gracie jiu jitsu was invented so the weak could complete with the strong.  This match, like a lot of  Royce’s matches, is a great example of that principle in motion.
